Hi, my name is

Praveen Voonna.

I build backend systems that scale.

I'm a backend engineer with 6+ years shipping production distributed systems in Go and Java. Currently at Cisco on the 5G mobility control plane — owning features end-to-end across BGP routing, BFD failure detection, SCTP transport, and the Kubernetes platform they run on.

Open to Senior SDE / SDE-2 / Backend Engineer roles in distributed systems, networking infrastructure, or AI-infrastructure teams. Open to relocation across India, or remote-first companies.

01. About

I build the unglamorous parts of the stack that have to keep working — the routing protocols, the retry frameworks, the on-call pages that wake you at 3 a.m. I like systems where correctness is non-negotiable and where a single misplaced lock is the difference between a happy customer and a Sev-1.

At Cisco I work on the shared control plane underpinning 5G mobility network functions deployed by tier-1 telco operators. Before that I led backend & ETL optimisation for Anywhere Real Estate (Realogy) at LTIMindtree, and built full-stack utility platforms for PG&E and APS at Infosys.

Recognised by Cisco's President & Chief Product Officer, Jeetu Patel, for AI fluency in engineering practice — Connected Recognition (You Inspire 2), June 2025.

02. Where I've Worked

Pune

Software Engineer · Cisco Systems

5G Mobility App-Infra team — own features end-to-end across the BGP/BFD/SCTP networking stack and the Kubernetes platform they run on.

  • Designed and shipped IPv6-only BGP bring-up, BGP gRPC management-plane decoupling, a route-addition retry framework with exponential backoff and static-route failover, and end-to-end QoS (DSCP) classification for SCTP transport — all running on cloud-native NFs deployed by tier-1 telcos.
  • Re-engineered the BFD subsystem with RFC 5881-compliant port allocation, bounded retries and etcd caching — cutting control-plane watch traffic ~70% and clearing 4 customer escalations across 2 release branches.
  • Drove Go, Kubernetes, gRPC and base-image upgrades across 8+ infrastructure repositories; coordinated with multiple downstream teams.
  • Resolved 25+ customer escalations with patches backported across multiple release branches.
  • Raised unit-test coverage of the ~150k-LOC Go codebase from 93% to 99% by targeting error paths, concurrency edges and CLI handlers; the new tests caught 5+ regressions pre-merge.

Senior Software Engineer · LTIMindtree

Backend lead on Anywhere Real Estate (Realogy) — Go gRPC and REST APIs across 10–15 service repos and 100+ endpoints, on AWS.

  • Cut a high-traffic search API's p95 latency from ~90s to ~20s (4.5× faster) and CPU usage by ~40% via Go parallel processing with bounded concurrency.
  • Re-engineered an Oracle → MongoDB ETL pipeline from 7 days to 6 hours (28× faster) using concurrent worker pools and batched processing, enabling daily reporting.
  • Introduced field-level access control and hardened authn/authz across the platform.

Systems Engineer · Infosys

Backend & full-stack for two US utilities — Pacific Gas & Electric and Arizona Public Service.

  • Built and maintained Java Spring Boot services and REST integrations powering customer-facing portals.
  • Top-rated trainee in the Infosys full-stack programme (91%).

Purpose Fine-Tuned Large Language Model for End User Application Detection

Co-inventor with Rajasekar Subramanian, Divyansh Sharma, Koushik Padavalli Gowrish

AppLLM — combining LoRA fine-tuning with Chain-of-Thought reasoning for explainable network application classification, integrated into the VPP data plane to address limitations of traditional Deep Packet Inspection on encrypted traffic. Inline deployment achieves <35 ms latency with full audit trails.

ishidawataru/sctp — SyscallConn() for SCTPConn & SCTPListener

3 commits authored · reviewed & merged by maintainer Wataru Ishida

Added SyscallConn() on SCTPConn and SCTPListener with unit tests — exposes syscall.RawConn for socket-option work and aligns the de-facto Go SCTP library with the stdlib net.Conn / net.Listener interface contract. Drove the change from a real production need on Cisco's 5G mobility platform back into upstream open source.
